ThundersportGB on Motors TV set for major free-to-air terrestrial expansion!
• Channel 71 the new home of terrestrial ThundersportGB coverage
• Freeview HD and YouView homes will ALL be connected
From Thursday October 9th Motors TV will be available to all regular free-to-air households across the UK in a move that’s set to dramatically increase the number of people able to receive the High Speed Television Channel that screens ThundersportGB's: Thundersport Elite, GP Racing Dream and Thundersport Plus 90min shows.
Following a successful seven-month trial on Arqiva’s Connect TV broadband service, Arqiva has now enabled the dedicated motorsport network to be rolled out to the 9.2million households that receive television broadcasts via standard free-to-air TV platforms.
THAT'S POTENTIALLY OVER 30 MILLION EXTRA VIEWERS!
From 8pm Thursday 9th October 2014, new viewers are encouraged to re-tune their YouView, BT and FreeviewHD boxes/compatible TV's and switch to Channel 71 (the latest FreeviewHD & all YouView devices should automatically update).
Compatible devices will also be able to pause and record programming, just like other standard free-to-air channels.
Motors TV’s free-to-air service, which begins broadcasting Thursday 9th Oct 2014, will mirror that of its current full-time Sky, Virgin Media and currently connected-free-to-air Freeview240 Broadband programming. But ONLY between 8:00pm – 5:00am on weekdays while remaining on air right around the clock during weekends (Friday 8:00pm – Monday 5:00am). Sky, Virgin Media and currently connected-free-to-air Freeview240 Broadband outputs will remain unaffected & remain available 24/7.
While some new customers might find that scenario slightly strange and maybe even a little frustrating, it does allow Motors TV to further expand its reach by sharing and thus mitigating the highly expensive logistical and British licencing costs. This offers far more motorsport fans the opportunity to tune in and if successful after a decent trial 'lead-in' period, doubtless MotorsTV will go 24/7 in the future, as Head of Programming and Acquisitions, Frederic Viger, explains:
“The Arqiva Connect TV trial proved there are far more motorsport viewers out there than were originally watching on our other platforms,” he said. “From the start we saw it as a stepping stone and the fantastic response has given us the confidence to continue expanding. Plus, many more potential viewers have also been very vocal on social media about wanting to receive the channel via FreeviewHD and YouView. Well, this is the result! For the first time ever terrestrial TV viewers can watch the widest range of live motorsport coverage in the UK, as well as world championships, international and national series, and the sort of grassroots categories that are already enjoyed by thousands of fans across the country."
Motors TV is available to FreeviewHD homes with compatible FreeviewHD equipment. The channel is broadcast in standard definition for now. The Freeview service is subject to available coverage (some local transmitters may take a while to catch up). An aerial upgrade may possibly be required. Bush FreeviewHD boxes for reception from your normal TV aerial can be aquired for as little as £49.99 from retail outlets such as Argos (probably much cheaper than that if you search online, HD is the important bit to remember with regard to FreeviewHD boxes though).
ThundersportGB Marketing Director Syd Richard-Day says:
"This is a huge boost for ThundersportGB, it's series sponsors, it's riders, teams & their personal sponsors too, a lot of work, time & effort has gone into making this happen & with the noticeable upgrade in our coverage for the series in 2014, we stand ready to enter 2015 bigger & better once more to improve motorcycle racing in this country...
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Fred & his team at MotorsTV, for listening to our ideas & representations, for investing in this expansion to a phenominal new UK audience en-masse & believing in British Motorsport through & through (we at ThundersportGB intend to continue delivering TOP CLASS motorcycle racing for you).
I would also like to thank my partners Dave Stewart (the engineer behind ThundersportGB and now author & designer of our brilliant raceday programmes), Bernadette Stewart (Race Secretary/Paddock Office) & my long suffering & enduring wife Jan (Assistant Race Secretary in Paddock Office). Our superb ThundersportGB team of Marshals & Officials (who make the whole thing run so smootly), our brilliant Series sponsors that afford us the costs of the TV (so no rider has to feel they are paying for it from their entry fees) & our production team at 'Last Lap Television'.
Most of all though, I'd like to thank YOU, the riders, teams, fans, photographers & supporters of the series, for it is YOU ALL that make ThundersportGB what it is today! I'm already looking forward to seeing you all at our Mallory Park Finale Round AND next season too. CAN IT GET ANY BETTER? Just watch... we think it CAN!!!"
